Band Reparation Information

Sweetgrass First Nation is one of 325 member Nations in the successful Band Reparations class action
lawsuit. The lawsuit stated that the Government of Canada is responsible for damages to Indigenous
communities caused by the Indian Residential School System and, in particular, the collective harm
suffered by Indigenous communities due to the loss of language and culture because of Indian
Residential Schools.
The funds awarded from the lawsuit are to be used to support:
- Revival and protection of Indigenous language
- Revival and protection of Indigenous culture
- Promotion and protection of heritage
- Wellness for Indigenous communities and their members
Sweetgrass is starting to develop a 10-Year Plan outlining how the Nation will spend the Band
Reparations funds for Sweetgrass language, culture, heritage, and wellness.
To make sure the 10-Year Plan reflects the needs of Sweetgrass members, the Nation is asking for
member participation in a community survey and community open houses facilitated by MNP, who is
helping the Nation with developing the Plan.
